St. Vincent de Paul Richmond is launching a coaching initiative designed to help neighbors build the financial understanding and habits needed for long‑term stability. This program pairs trained financial coaches with selected neighbors and their case workers to:

What Makes an Effective SVdP Financial Coach?

We are seeking volunteers who embody the Vincentian spirit of compassion, humility, and service. Ideal coaches demonstrate:

Exceptional Listening Skills

Coaches spend 80% of their time listening and 20% speaking, allowing neighbors to express their emotions, experiences, and beliefs about money.

A Non‑Judgmental Presence

Coaches create a safe, welcoming environment where neighbors can openly discuss debt, past mistakes, and financial challenges without shame.

Motivational Interviewing Techniques

Rather than giving instructions, coaches use open‑ended questions that help neighbors discover their own solutions and build confidence.

Clear Boundary Setting

Coaches understand the difference between coaching, therapy, and emergency assistance—and know when to refer neighbors to professional social workers.
