Often, our neighbors in need will find shelter in an extended stay motel. They are working and can afford the rent, but they are unable to save for a deposit for a true home of their own. This program helps with a deposit and other move in costs while providing in depth case management for 1 year to help those we serve.
Often times are friends in need find themselves seeking easy cash through ridiculously high interest loans. These loans only put our friends further in the hole. The Society introduced our Mini Loan Program to help combat this issue. Together with Village Bank in Richmond, we are helping families escape the payday loan trap.
In 2024, St. Vincent de Paul Richmond Council started the Car Repair Fund. Many of our neighbors in need struggle to make ends meet. Often, they cannot afford a car repair. But without transportation, their lives become even more challenging. This fund provides additional support for our Conferences during their home visits.
In 2023, St. Vincent de Paul Council began our initial work with veterans though Operation Turkey. We provided more than 50 veterans with Thanksgiving meals by partnering with Feed More, Liberation Veteran Services, and other veteran service providers.
Middle and high school students praying, reflecting on the Gospels, and learning about Vincentian spirituality. Add in some service projects done in the spirit of Vincentian friendship, you have Young Vincentians. The first in the entire State of Virginia started in 2019, at St. Michael.
Often times, our friends in need will need mattresses. Our Council, through our Thrift Store, can provide new mattresses and platforms for friends in need, working with our Vincentians.
Advocating together on behalf of those without a voice is important to us. Through a national Vincentian effort to help our friends in need, we identify critical issues to those living in poverty, by bringing attention to them, so communities and our elected representatives can help develop strategies and tactics which will provide the most effective and efficient means, to reduce or eliminate poverty.
We hear from many families during the Christmas season, who can't experience giving their children something on Christmas morning. We want to help them! This is an internal program, which is private and requires pre-registration. The Christmas Toy Shop is for existing neighbors in need, currently being helped by one of our local Conferences.
